Once a few people have it, it becomes easier to spread it from human to human. New influenzas spread rather quickly because it is new, humans have no immunity to this virus. For a virus to be considered pandemic it must be infectious hence the reason why it spreads rapidly between humans. While there are many global pandemics throughout the years such as the Black Death, Malaria, Smallpox; HIV/AIDS is still currently spreading and rapidly. Global pandemics such as HIV/AIDS are considered an existential risk because of the mass amount of people that suffer and die from t hese diseases and the fact that they are so easily spread through various ways. The Twilight Saga 3 Eclipse Chapter 10. SCENT Free Essays

IT WAS ALL VERY CHILDISH. WHY ON EARTH SHOULD EDward have to leave for Jacob to come over? Weren’t we past this kind of immaturity? â€Å"It’s not that I feel any personal antagonism toward him, Bella, it’s just easier for both of us,† Edward told me at the door. â€Å"I won’t be far away. We will write a custom essay sample on The Twilight Saga 3: Eclipse Chapter 10. SCENT or any similar topic only for you Order Now You’ll be safe.† â€Å"I’m not worried about that.† He smiled, and then a sly look came into his eye. He pulled me close, burying his face in my hair. I could feel his cool breath saturate the strands as he exhaled; it raised goose bumps on my neck. â€Å"I’ll be right back,† he said, and then he laughed aloud as if I’d just told a good joke. â€Å"What’s so funny?† But Edward just grinned and loped off toward the trees without answering. Grumbling to myself, I went to clean up the kitchen. Before I even had the sink full of water, the doorbell rang. It was hard to get used to how much faster Jacob was without his car. How everyone seemed to be so much faster than me. . . . â€Å"Come in, Jake!† I shouted. I was concentrating on piling the dishes into the bubbly water, and I’d forgotten that Jacob moved like a ghost these days. So it made me jump when his voice was suddenly there behind me. â€Å"Should you really leave your door unlocked like that? Oh, sorry.† I’d slopped myself with the dishwater when he’d startled me. â€Å"I’m not worried about anyone who would be deterred by a locked door,† I said while I wiped the front of my shirt with a dishtowel. â€Å"Good point,† he agreed. I turned to look at him, eyeing him critically. â€Å"Is it really so impossible to wear clothes, Jacob?† I asked. Once again, Jacob was bare-chested, wearing nothing but a pair of old cut-off jeans. Secretly, I wondered if he was just so proud of his new muscles that he couldn’t stand to cover them up. I had to admit, they were impressive – but I’d never thought of him as vain. â€Å"I mean, I know you don’t get cold anymore, but still.† He ran a hand through his wet hair; it was falling in his eyes. â€Å"It’s just easier,† he explained. â€Å"What’s easier?† He smiled condescendingly. â€Å"It’s enough of a pain to carry the shorts around with me, let alone a complete outfit. What do I look like, a pack mule?† I frowned. â€Å"What are you talking about, Jacob?† His expression was superior, like I was missing something obvious. â€Å"My clothes don’t just pop in and out of existence when I change – I have to carry them with me while I run. Pardon me for keeping my burden light.† I changed color. â€Å"I guess I didn’t think about that,† I muttered. He laughed and pointed to a black leather cord, thin as a strand of yarn, that was wound three times below his left calf like an anklet. I hadn’t noticed before that his feet were bare, too. â€Å"That’s more than just a fashion statement – it sucks to carry jeans in your mouth.† I didn’t know what to say to that. He grinned. â€Å"Does my being half-naked bother you?† â€Å"No.† Jacob laughed again, and I turned my back on him to focus on the dishes. I hoped he realized my blush was left over from embarrassment at my own stupidity, and had nothing to do with his question. â€Å"Well, I suppose I should get to work.† He sighed. â€Å"I wouldn’t want to give him an excuse to say I’m slacking on my side.† â€Å"Jacob, it’s not your job -â€Å" He raised a hand to cut me off. â€Å"I’m working on a volunteer basis here. Now, where is the intruder’s scent the worst?† â€Å"My bedroom, I think.† His eyes narrowed. He didn’t like that any more than Edward had. â€Å"I’ll just be a minute.† I methodically scrubbed the plate I was holding. The only sound was the brush’s plastic bristles scraping round and round on the ceramic. I listened for something from above, a creak of the floorboard, the click of a door. There was nothing. I realized I’d been cleaning the same plate far longer than necessary, and I tried to pay attention to what I was doing. â€Å"Whew!† Jacob said, inches behind me, scaring me again. â€Å"Yeesh, Jake, cut that out!† â€Å"Sorry. Here -† Jacob took the towel and mopped up my new spill. â€Å"I’ll make it up to you. You wash, I’ll rinse and dry.† â€Å"Fine.† I gave him the plate. â€Å"Well, the scent was easy enough to catch. By the way, your room reeks.† â€Å"I’ll buy some air freshener.† He laughed. I washed and he dried in companionable silence for a few minutes. â€Å"Can I ask you something?† I handed him another plate. â€Å"That depends on what you want to know.† â€Å"I’m not trying to be a jerk or anything – I’m honestly curious,† Jacob assured me. â€Å"Fine. Go ahead.† He paused for half a second. â€Å"What’s it like – having a vampire for a boyfriend?† I rolled my eyes. â€Å"It’s the best.† â€Å"I’m serious. The idea doesn’t bother you – it never creeps you out?† â€Å"Never.† He was silent as he reached for the bowl in my hands. I peeked up at his face – he was frowning, his lower lip jutting out. â€Å"Anything else?† I asked. He wrinkled his nose again. â€Å"Well . . . I was wondering . . . do you . . . y’know, kiss him?† I laughed. â€Å"Yes.† He shuddered. â€Å"Ugh.† â€Å"To each her own,† I murmured. â€Å"You don’t worry about the fangs?† I smacked his arm, splashing him with dishwater. â€Å"Shut up, Jacob! You know he doesn’t have fangs!† â€Å"Close enough,† he muttered. I gritted my teeth and scrubbed a boning knife with more force than necessary. â€Å"Can I ask another one?† he asked softly when I passed the knife to him. â€Å"Just curious, again.† â€Å"Fine,† I snapped. He turned the knife over and over in his hands under the stream of water. When he spoke, it was only a whisper. â€Å"You said a few weeks. . . . When, exactly . . . ?† He couldn’t finish. â€Å"Graduation,† I whispered back, watching his face warily. Would this set him off again? â€Å"So soon,† he breathed, his eyes closing. It didn’t sound like a question. It sounded like a lament. The muscles in his arms tightened and his shoulders were stiff. â€Å"OW!† he shouted; it had gotten so still in the room that I jumped a foot in the air at his outburst. His right hand had curled into a tense fist around the blade of the knife – he unclenched his hand and the knife clattered onto the counter. Across his palm was a long, deep gash. The blood streamed down his fingers and dripped on the floor. â€Å"Damn it! Ouch!† he complained. My head spun and my stomach rolled. I clung to the countertop with one hand, took a deep breath through my mouth, and forced myself to get a grip so that I could take care of him. â€Å"Oh, no, Jacob! Oh, crap! Here, wrap this around it!† I shoved the dish towel at him, reaching for his hand. He shrugged away from me. â€Å"It’s nothing, Bella, don’t worry about it.† The room started to shimmer a little around the edges. I took another deep breath. â€Å"Don’t worry?! You sliced your hand open!† He ignored the dish towel I pushed at him. He put his hand under the faucet and let the water wash over the wound. The water ran red. My head whirled. â€Å"Bella,† he said. I looked away from the wound, up to his face. He was frowning, but his expression was calm. â€Å"What?† â€Å"You look like you’re going to pass out, and you’re biting your lip off. Stop it. Relax. Breathe. I’m fine.† I inhaled through my mouth and removed my teeth from my lower lip. â€Å"Don’t be brave.† He rolled his eyes. â€Å"Let’s go. I’ll drive you to the ER.† I was pretty sure I would be okay to drive. The walls were holding steady now, at least. â€Å"Not necessary.† Jake turned off the water and took the towel from my hand. He twisted it loosely around his palm. â€Å"Wait,† I protested. â€Å"Let me look at it.† I clutched the counter more firmly, to hold myself upright if the wound made me woozy again. â€Å"Do you have a medical degree that you never told me about?† â€Å"Just give me the chance to decide whether or not I’m going to throw a fit over taking you to the hospital.† He made a face of mock horror. â€Å"Please, not a fit!† â€Å"If you don’t let me see your hand, a fit is guaranteed.† He inhaled deeply, and then let out a gusty sigh. â€Å"Fine.† He unwound the towel and, when I reached out to take the cloth, he laid his hand in mine. It took me a few seconds. I even flipped his hand over, though I was sure he’d cut his palm. I turned his hand back up, finally realizing that the angry pink, puckered line was all that was left of his wound. â€Å"But . . . you were bleeding . . . so much.† He pulled his hand back, his eyes steady and somber on mine. â€Å"I heal fast.† â€Å"I’ll say,† I mouthed. I’d seen the long gash clearly, seen the blood that flowed into the sink. The rust-and-salt smell of it had almost pulled me under. It should have needed stitches. It should have taken days to scab over and then weeks to fade into the shiny pink scar that marked his skin now. He screwed his mouth up into half a smile and thumped his fist once against his chest. â€Å"Werewolf, remember?† His eyes held mine for an immeasurable moment. â€Å"Right,† I finally said. He laughed at my expression. â€Å"I told you this. You saw Paul’s scar.† I shook my head to clear it. â€Å"It’s a little different, seeing the action sequence firsthand.† I kneeled down and dug the bleach out of the cabinet under the sink. Then I poured some on a dusting rag and started scrubbing the floor. The burning scent of the bleach cleared the last of the dizziness from my head. â€Å"Let me clean up,† Jacob said. â€Å"I got this. Throw that towel in the wash, will you?† When I was sure the floor smelled of nothing but bleach, I got up and rinsed the right side of the sink with bleach, too. Then I went to the laundry closet beside the pantry, and poured a cupful into the washing machine before starting it. Jacob watched me with a disapproving look on his face. â€Å"Do you have obsessive-compulsive disorder?† he asked when I was done. Huh. Maybe. But at least I had a good excuse this time. â€Å"We’re a bit sensitive to blood around here. I’m sure you can understand that.† â€Å"Oh.† He wrinkled his nose again. â€Å"Why not make it as easy as possible for him? What he’s doing is hard enough.† â€Å"Sure, sure. Why not?† I pulled the plug, and let the dirty water drain from the sink. â€Å"Can I ask you something, Bella?† I sighed. â€Å"What’s it like – having a werewolf for a best friend?† The question caught me off guard. I laughed out loud. â€Å"Does it creep you out?† he pressed before I could answer. â€Å"No. When the werewolf is being nice,† I qualified, â€Å"it’s the best.† He grinned widely, his teeth bright against his russet skin. â€Å"Thanks, Bella,† he said, and then he grabbed my hand and wrenched me into one of his bone-crushing hugs. Before I had time to react, he dropped his arms and stepped away. â€Å"Ugh,† he said, his nose wrinkling. â€Å"Your hair stinks worse than your room.† â€Å"Sorry,† I muttered. I suddenly understood what Edward had been laughing about earlier, after breathing on me. â€Å"One of the many hazards of socializing with vampires,† Jacob said, shrugging. â€Å"It makes you smell bad. A minor hazard, comparatively.† I glared at him. â€Å"I only smell bad to you, Jake.† He grinned. â€Å"See you around, Bells.† â€Å"Are you leaving?† â€Å"He’s waiting for me to go. I can hear him outside.† â€Å"Oh.† â€Å"I’ll go out the back,† he said, and then he paused. â€Å"Hold up a sec – hey, do you think you can come to La Push tonight? We’re having a bonfire party. Emily will be there, and you could meet Kim . . . And I know Quil wants to see you, too. He’s pretty peeved that you found out before he did.† I grinned at that. I could just imagine how that would have irked Quil – Jacob’s little human gal pal down with the werewolves while he was still clueless. And then I sighed. â€Å"Yeah, Jake, I don’t know about that. See, it’s a little tense right now. . . .† â€Å"C’mon, you think somebody’s going to get past all – all six of us?† There was a strange pause as he stuttered over the end of his question. I wondered if he had trouble saying the word werewolf aloud, the way I often had difficulty with vampire. His big dark eyes were full of unashamed pleading. â€Å"I’ll ask,† I said doubtfully. He made a noise in the back of his throat. â€Å"Is he your warden, now, too? You know, I saw this story on the news last week about controlling, abusive teenage relationships and -â€Å" â€Å"Okay!† I cut him off, and then shoved his arm. â€Å"Time for the werewolf to get out!† He grinned. â€Å"Bye, Bells. Be sure you ask permission.† He ducked out the back door before I could find something to throw at him. I growled incoherently at the empty room. Seconds after he was gone, Edward walked slowly into the kitchen, raindrops glistening like diamonds set into the bronze of his hair. His eyes were wary. â€Å"Did you two get into a fight?† he asked. â€Å"Edward!† I sang, throwing myself at him. â€Å"Hi, there.† He laughed and wrapped his arms around me. â€Å"Are you trying to distract me? It’s working.† â€Å"No, I didn’t fight with Jacob. Much. Why?† â€Å"I was just wondering why you stabbed him. Not that I object.† With his chin, he gestured to the knife on the counter. â€Å"Dang! I thought I got everything.† I pulled away from him and ran to put the knife in the sink before I doused it with bleach. â€Å"I didn’t stab him,† I explained as I worked. â€Å"He forgot he had a knife in his hand.† Edward chuckled. â€Å"That’s not nearly as fun as the way I imagined it.† â€Å"Be nice.† He took a big envelope from his jacket pocket and tossed it on the counter. â€Å"I got your mail.† â€Å"Anything good?† â€Å"I think so.† My eyes narrowed suspiciously at his tone. I went to investigate. He’d folded the legal-sized envelope in half. I smoothed it open, surprised at the weight of the expensive paper, and read the return address. â€Å"Dartmouth? Is this a joke?† â€Å"I’m sure it’s an acceptance. It looks exactly like mine.† â€Å"Good grief, Edward – what did you do?† â€Å"I sent in your application, that’s all.† â€Å"I may not be Dartmouth material, but I’m not stupid enough to believe that.† â€Å"Dartmouth seems to think that you’re Dartmouth material.† I took a deep breath and counted slowly to ten. â€Å"That’s very generous of them,† I finally said. â€Å"However, accepted or not, there is still the minor matter of tuition. I can’t afford it, and I’m not letting you throw away enough money to buy yourself another sports car just so that I can pretend to go to Dartmouth next year.† â€Å"I don’t need another sports car. And you don’t have to pretend anything,† he murmured. â€Å"One year of college wouldn’t kill you. Maybe you’d even like it. Just think about it, Bella. Imagine how excited Charlie and Rene would be. . . .† His velvet voice painted the picture in my head before I could block it. Of course Charlie would explode with pride – no one in the town of Forks would be able to escape the fallout from his excitement. And Rene would be hysterical with joy at my triumph – though she’d swear she wasn’t at all surprised. . . . I tried to shake the image out of my head. â€Å"Edward. I’m worried about living through graduation, let alone this summer or next fall.† His arms wrapped around me again. â€Å"No one is going to hurt you. You have all the time in the world.† I sighed. â€Å"I’m mailing the contents of my bank account to Alaska tomorrow. It’s all the alibi I need. It’s far enough away that Charlie won’t expect a visit until Christmas at the earliest. And I’m sure I’ll think of some excuse by then. You know,† I teased halfheartedly, â€Å"this whole secrecy and deception thing is kind of a pain.† Edward’s expression hardened. â€Å"It gets easier. After a few decades, everyone you know is dead. Problem solved.† I flinched. â€Å"Sorry, that was harsh.† I stared down at the big white envelope, not seeing it. â€Å"But still true.† â€Å"If I get this resolved, whatever it is we’re dealing with, will you please consider waiting?† â€Å"Nope.† â€Å"Always so stubborn.† â€Å"Yep.† The washing machine thumped and stuttered to a halt. â€Å"Stupid piece of junk,† I muttered as I pulled away from him. I moved the one small towel that had unbalanced the otherwise empty machine, and started it again. â€Å"This reminds me,† I said. â€Å"Could you ask Alice what she did with my stuff when she cleaned my room? I can’t find it anywhere.† He looked at me with confused eyes. â€Å"Alice cleaned your room?† â€Å"Yeah, I guess that’s what she was doing. When she came to get my pajamas and pillow and stuff to hold me hostage.† I glowered at him briefly. â€Å"She picked up everything that was lying around, my shirts, my socks, and I don’t know where she put them.† Edward continued to look confused for one short moment, and then, abruptly, he was rigid. â€Å"When did you notice your things were missing?† â€Å"When I got back from the fake slumber party. Why?† â€Å"I don’t think Alice took anything. Not your clothes, or your pillow. The things that were taken, these were things you’d worn . . . and touched . . . and slept on?† â€Å"Yes. What is it, Edward?† His expression was strained. â€Å"Things with your scent.† â€Å"Oh!† We stared into each others eyes for a long moment. â€Å"My visitor,† I muttered. â€Å"He was gathering traces . . . evidence. To prove that he’d found you?† â€Å"Why?† I whispered. â€Å"I don’t know. But, Bella, I swear I will find out. I will.† â€Å"I know you will,† I said, laying my head against his chest. Leaning there, I felt his phone vibrate in his pocket. He pulled out his phone and glanced at the number. â€Å"Just the person I need to talk to,† he murmured, and then he flipped it open. â€Å"Carlisle, I -† He broke off and listened, his face taut with concentration for a few minutes. â€Å"I’ll check it out. Listen . . .† He explained about my missing things, but from the side I was hearing, it sounded like Carlisle had no insights for us. â€Å"Maybe I’ll go . . . ,† Edward said, trailing off as his eyes drifted toward me. â€Å"Maybe not. Don’t let Emmett go alone, you know how he gets. At least ask Alice keep an eye on things. We’ll figure this out later.† He snapped the phone shut. â€Å"Where’s the paper?† he asked me. â€Å"Um, I’m not sure. Why?† â€Å"I need to see something. Did Charlie already throw it out?† â€Å"Maybe. . . .† Edward disappeared. He was back in half a second, new diamonds in his hair, a wet newspaper in his hands. He spread it out on the table, his eyes scanning quickly across the headlines. He leaned in, intent on something he was reading, one finger tracing passages that interested him most. â€Å"Carlisle’s right . . . yes . . . very sloppy. Young and crazed? Or a death wish?† he muttered to himself. I went to peek over his shoulder. The headline of the Seattle Times read: â€Å"Murder Epidemic Continues – Police Have No New Leads.† It was almost the same story Charlie had been complaining about a few weeks ago – the big-city violence that was pushing Seattle up the national murder hot-spot list. It wasn’t exactly the same story, though. The numbers were a lot higher. â€Å"It’s getting worse,† I murmured. He frowned. â€Å"Altogether out of control. This can’t be the work of just one newborn vampire. What’s going on? It’s as if they’ve never heard of the Volturi. Which is possible, I guess. No one has explained the rules to them . . . so who is creating them, then?† â€Å"The Volturi?† I repeated, shuddering. â€Å"This is exactly the kind of thing they routinely wipe out – immortals who threaten to expose us. They just cleaned up a mess like this a few years ago in Atlanta, and it hadn’t gotten nearly this bad. They will intervene soon, very soon, unless we can find some way to calm the situation. I’d really rather they didn’t come to Seattle just now. As long as they’re this close . . . they might decide to check on you.† I shuddered again. â€Å"What can we do?† â€Å"We need to know more before we can decide that. Perhaps if we can talk to these young ones, explain the rules, it can be resolved peacefully.† He frowned, like he didn’t think the chances of that were good. â€Å"We’ll wait until Alice has an idea of what’s going on. . . . We don’t want to step in until it’s absolutely necessary. After all, it’s not our responsibility. But it’s good we have Jasper,† he added, almost to himself. â€Å"If we are dealing with newborns, he’ll be helpful.† â€Å"Jasper? Why?† Edward smiled darkly. â€Å"Jasper is sort of an expert on young vampires.† â€Å"What do you mean, an expert?† â€Å"You’ll have to ask him – the story is involved.† â€Å"What a mess,† I mumbled. â€Å"It does feel that way, doesn’t it? Like it’s coming at us from all sides these days.† He sighed. â€Å"Do you ever think that your life might be easier if you weren’t in love with me?† â€Å"Maybe. It wouldn’t be much of a life, though.† â€Å"For me,† he amended quietly. â€Å"And now, I suppose,† he continued with a wry smile, â€Å"you have something you want to ask me?† I stared at him blankly. â€Å"I do?† â€Å"Or maybe not.† He grinned. â€Å"I was rather under the impression that you’d promised to ask my permission to go to some kind of werewolf soire tonight.† â€Å"Eavesdropping again?† He grinned. â€Å"Just a bit, at the very end.† â€Å"Well, I wasn’t going to ask you anyway. I figured you had enough to stress about.† He put his hand under my chin, and held my face so that he could read my eyes. â€Å"Would you like to go?† â€Å"It’s no big thing. Don’t worry about it.† â€Å"You don’t have to ask my permission, Bella. I’m not your father – thank heaven for that. Perhaps you should ask Charlie, though.† â€Å"But you know Charlie will say yes.† â€Å"I do have a bit more insight into his probable answer than most people would, it’s true.† I just stared at him, trying to understand what he wanted, and trying to put out of my mind the yearning I felt to go to La Push so that I wouldn’t be swayed by my own wishes. It was stupid to want to go hang out with a bunch of big idiot wolf-boys right now when there was so much that was frightening and unexplained going on. Of course, that was exactly why I wanted to go. I wanted to escape the death threats, for just a few hours . . . to be the less-mature, more-reckless Bella who could laugh it off with Jacob, if only briefly. But that didn’t matter. â€Å"Bella,† Edward said. â€Å"I told you that I was going to be reasonable and trust your judgment. I meant that. If you trust the werewolves, then I’m not going to worry about them.† â€Å"Wow,† I said, as I had last night. â€Å"And Jacob’s right – about one thing, anyway – a pack of werewolves ought to be enough to protect even you for one evening.† â€Å"Are you sure?† â€Å"Of course. Only . . .† I braced myself. â€Å"I hope you won’t mind taking a few precautions? Allowing me to drive you to the boundary line, for one. And then taking a cell phone, so that I’ll know when to pick you up?† â€Å"That sounds . . . very reasonable.† â€Å"Excellent.† He smiled at me, and I could see no trace of apprehension in his jewel-like eyes. To no one’s surprise, Charlie had no problem at all with me going to La Push for a bonfire. Jacob crowed with undisguised exultation when I called to give him the news, and he seemed eager enough to embrace Edward’s safety measures. He promised to meet us at the line between territories at six. I had decided, after a short internal debate, that I would not sell my motorcycle. I would take it back to La Push where it belonged and, when I no longer needed it anymore . . . well, then, I would insist that Jacob profit from his work somehow. He could sell it or give it to a friend. It didn’t matter to me. Tonight seemed like a good opportunity to return the bike to Jacob’s garage. As gloomy as I was feeling about things lately, every day seemed like a possible last chance. I didn’t have time to procrastinate any task, no matter how minor. Edward only nodded when I explained what I wanted, but I thought I saw a flicker of consternation in his eyes, and I knew he was no happier about the idea of me on a motorcycle than Charlie was. I followed him back to his house, to the garage where I’d left the bike. It wasn’t until I pulled the truck in and got out that I realized the consternation might not be entirely about my safety this time. Next to my little antique motorcycle, overshadowing it, was another vehicle. To call this other vehicle a motorcycle hardly seemed fair, since it didn’t seem to belong to the same family as my suddenly shabby- looking bike. It was big and sleek and silver and – even totally motionless – it looked fast. â€Å"What is that?† â€Å"Nothing,† Edward murmured. â€Å"It doesn’t look like nothing.† Edward’s expression was casual; he seemed determined to blow it off. â€Å"Well, I didn’t know if you were going to forgive your friend, or he you, and I wondered if you would still want to ride your bike anyway. It sounded like it was something that you enjoyed. I thought I could go with you, if you wished.† He shrugged. I stared at the beautiful machine. Beside it, my bike looked like a broken tricycle. I felt a sudden wave of sadness when I realized that this was not a bad analogy for the way I probably looked next to Edward. â€Å"I wouldn’t be able to keep up with you,† I whispered. Edward put his hand under my chin and pulled my face around so that he could see it straight on. With one finger, he tried to push the corner of my mouth up. â€Å"I’d keep pace with you, Bella.† â€Å"That wouldn’t be much fun for you.† â€Å"Of course it would, if we were together.† I bit my lip and imagined it for a moment. â€Å"Edward, if you thought I was going too fast or losing control of the bike or something, what would you do?† He hesitated, obviously trying to find the right answer. I knew the truth: he’d find some way to save me before I crashed. Then he smiled. It looked effortless, except for the tiny defensive tightening of his eyes. â€Å"This is something you do with Jacob. I see that now.† â€Å"It’s just that, well, I don’t slow him down so much, you know. I could try, I guess. . . .† I eyed the silver motorcycle doubtfully. â€Å"Don’t worry about it,† Edward said, and then he laughed lightly. â€Å"I saw Jasper admiring it. Perhaps it’s time he discovered a new way to travel. After all, Alice has her Porsche now.† â€Å"Edward, I -â€Å" He interrupted me with a quick kiss. â€Å"I said not to worry. But would you do something for me?† â€Å"Whatever you need,† I promised quickly. He dropped my face and leaned over the far side of the big motorcycle, retrieving something he had stashed there. He came back with one object that was black and shapeless, and another that was red and easily identifiable. â€Å"Please?† he asked, flashing the crooked smile that always destroyed my resistance. I took the red helmet, weighing it in my hands. â€Å"I’ll look stupid.† â€Å"No, you’ll look smart. Smart enough not to get yourself hurt.† He threw the black thing, whatever it was, over his arm and then took my face in his hands. â€Å"There are things between my hands right now that I can’t live without. You could take care of them.† â€Å"Okay, fine. What’s that other thing?† I asked suspiciously. He laughed and shook out some kind of padded jacket. â€Å"It’s a riding jacket. I hear road rash is quite uncomfortable, not that I would know myself.† He held it out for me. With a deep sigh, I flipped my hair back and stuffed the helmet on my head. Then I shoved my arms through the sleeves of the jacket. He zipped me in, a smile playing around the corners of his lips, and took a step back. I felt bulky. â€Å"Be honest, how hideous do I look?† He took another step back and pursed his lips. â€Å"That bad, huh?† I muttered. â€Å"No, no, Bella. Actually . . .† he seemed to be struggling for the right word. â€Å"You look . . . sexy.† I laughed out loud. â€Å"Right.† â€Å"Very sexy, really.† â€Å"You are just saying that so that I’ll wear it,† I said. â€Å"But that’s okay. You’re right, it’s smarter.† He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me against his chest. â€Å"You’re silly. I suppose that’s part of your charm. Though, I’ll admit it, this helmet does have its drawbacks.† And then he pulled the helmet off so that he could kiss me. As Edward drove me toward La Push a little while later, I realized that this unprecedented situation felt oddly familiar. It took me a moment of thought to pinpoint the source of the dj vu. â€Å"You know what this reminds me of?† I asked. â€Å"It’s just like when I was a kid and Rene would pass me off to Charlie for the summer. I feel like a seven-year-old.† Edward laughed. I didn’t mention it out loud, but the biggest difference between the two circumstances was that Rene and Charlie had been on better terms. About halfway to La Push, we rounded the corner and found Jacob leaning against the side of the red Volkswagen he’d built for himself out of scraps. Jacob’s carefully neutral expression dissolved into a smile when I waved from the front seat. Edward parked the Volvo thirty yards away. â€Å"Call me whenever you’re ready to come home,† he said. â€Å"And I’ll be here.† â€Å"I won’t be out late,† I promised. Edward pulled the bike and my new gear out of the trunk of his car – I’d been quite impressed that it had all fit. But it wasn’t so hard to manage when you were strong enough to juggle full-sized vans, let alone small motorcycles. Jacob watched, making no move to approach, his smile gone and his dark eyes indecipherable. I tucked the helmet under my arm and threw the jacket across the seat. â€Å"Do you have it all?† Edward asked. â€Å"No problem,† I assured him. He sighed and leaned toward me. I turned my face up for a goodbye peck, but Edward took me by surprise, fastening his arms tightly around me and kissing me with as much enthusiasm as he had in the garage – before long, I was gasping for air. Edward laughed quietly at something, and then let me go. â€Å"Goodbye,† he said. â€Å"I really do like the jacket.† As I turned away from him, I thought I saw a flash of something in his eyes that I wasn’t supposed to see. I couldn’t tell for sure what it was exactly. Worry, maybe. For a second I thought it was panic. But I was probably just making something out of nothing, as usual. I could feel his eyes on my back as I pushed my bike toward the invisible vampire-werewolf treaty line to meet Jacob. â€Å"What’s all that?† Jacob called to me, his voice wary, scrutinizing the motorcycle with an enigmatic expression. â€Å"I thought I should put this back where it belongs,† I told him. He pondered that for one short second, and then his wide smile stretched across his face. I knew the exact point that I was in werewolf territory because Jacob shoved away from his car and loped quickly over to me, closing the distance in three long strides. He took the bike from me, balanced it on the kickstand, and grabbed me up in another vice-tight hug. I heard the Volvo’s engine growl, and I struggled to get free. â€Å"Cut it out, Jake!† I gasped breathlessly. He laughed and set me down. I turned to wave goodbye, but the silver car was already disappearing around the curve in the road. â€Å"Nice,† I commented, allowing some acid to leak into my voice. His eyes widened in false innocence. â€Å"What?† â€Å"He’s being pretty dang pleasant about this; you don’t need to push your luck.† He laughed again, louder than before – he found what I’d said very funny indeed. I tried to see the joke as he walked around the Rabbit to hold my door open for me. â€Å"Bella,† he finally said – still chuckling – as he shut the door behind me, â€Å"you can’t push what you don’t have.† How to cite The Twilight Saga 3: Eclipse Chapter 10. Space exploration free essay sample

Space exploration is considered as an innovation, creativity and discovery that are facilitated by space technology and that can be used to improve the current technological position of a country. Space exploitation is evident to have several benefits that improve and advance the technology which is essential for making human life easier and simpler. Through various discoveries and explorations of the outer space of the universe, scientists and researchers have come up with ideas that are relevant in bettering and improving the technological position of different countries globally, and the security in different regions is fostered through space exploitation (Carole 12-33). Every technological innovation is facilitated by effective and effectual space exploration discoveries and this is only possible if there are enough funds and financial security form various organs including the governments. Following the above arguments, the government should spend funds on space exploration to improve the technology and thus improve the working standards and welfare of people. Space Exploration 2. Body Space exploration is perceived as the core aspect that contributes to successful technological innovations and discoveries that bring about positive change to the environment globally. The following are some of the reasons why the government should offer financial support to space exploration: Space exploration promotes science education- from the previous space explorations such as the Apollo missions, have triggered the minds of very many young people to struggle in educational field to become engineers and astronauts. They inspire people to be creative and innovative in getting the scientific ideas and thoughts that can be fostered in the current scenario. In addition, education has been taken to be the core  aspect to success in life and in improvement of the economic, social and political sectors in any country. Thus, in case the governments are free and willing to foster educational programs in schools, they should be at a position to offer financial support to space exploitation programs. This is because space exploitation has become a fundamental basis for career development to many educators and individuals willing to initiate new ideas and implement the m to advance the technology (Erik, 65-118). With the support of NASA’s Environmental Research, there are several benefits accrued with the environmental research that was conducted to help to conserve the environment and make it accommodative to human nature. NASA has played a great role in studying the environment and the factors that may affect the environment both negatively and positively. This has resulted to improvement of the environment globally. Through such research organizations such as NASA, substantive studies have been made on the air quality and climate change (Carole 12-33). This is beneficial in the sense that strategies and approaches have been devised to control air and climate pollutants that could otherwise been a threat to the human race. Discoveries and innovations related to alternative energy and control of hazardous objects has benefited many countries in the sense that the technology of these respective countries has been improved and advanced. For instance, the use of solar energy to generate power was an innovation that was reached at after space exploration programs were executed. Thus the government has the obligation of providing financial support to space exploration programs that have the aim of researching to improve the economic, social and political sectors of their respective countries and globally (Robert 179-209). Governments should invest in space exploration to control overpopulation that is evident in the world. It is clear that the current population of people in the earth is approximately 6. 8 billion which is very large in relation to the space in the earth. Some countries in the world like China are in a critical economic position due to overpopulation. Thus, there is need to find an alternative approach to place the extra population. In connection to this, every country should focus at providing support to space exploitation. The biggest heart of many scientist globally, which is considered as their dream is space colonization. The world is running short of natural resources due to overpopulation and need to improve the economic activities of every country. There is need and urgency to get ways that will help people get resources that will help them live a better life. There are arguments from the researches and space exploration discoveries that there are unlimited resources in the outer space. The governments should consider its responsibility to offer financial support to all programs that aim at bettering their countries, including space exploration (Robert 179-209). There are specific areas where space exploration has been observed to bring some positivity to the lives of people. Some of these areas are the moon, the sun, the earth and other planets. Reflecting on the past space exploitations and discoveries, there are several advantages and changes to the current world. Thus there is great hope that with support from the governments and other organizations, space exploration will still be an important tool to improving the technology of different countries and this will consequently improve the living standards of people. With the inspirations got from the previous space explorations, people are now focused and determined to work harder in schools to become astronauts and engineers and this is the greatest basis for space exploration. Hence, space programs will continue to be encouraged and the future of these programs is high following the support that scientist and some governments offer to such programs (Robert 179-209). 3. Conclusion Space exploitation is a tool that is very essential which is used to improve technology and make technological innovations and discoveries relevant in bettering the living standards of people. The governments should therefore, be responsible in offering financial support to space exploration programs among other programs that are aimed at improving the welfare of people. Scientists, researchers and educators should also subject substantive efforts to support space exploration as it is important in economic, social and political improvement globally. The Immigration Problem Essay Research Paper The free essay sample

The Immigration Problem Essay, Research Paper The Immigration Problem The inquiry is have we given up on turning our immigrants into Americans ( Brimelow 30 ) . Undoubtedly, all the hipped-up controversial rhetoric will discourage the immigrant population from going legal. It has become such a fuss to travel through the procedure that many people choose to traverse the boundary line without permission. Before 1960, eighty per centum of the in-migration to America came from Europe. Since 1960, nevertheless, 80 per centum has come from topographic points other than Europe ( Wishard 153 ) . As a consequence, immigrant Torahs have become less accepting of the immigrant community. Long ago, European immigrants were given a occupation, shelter, and nutrient. Soon, the new immigrants were granted citizenship and vote privileges ( Hernandez A1 ) . Today, immigrants are lucky to traverse the lodger without being changeable # 8211 ; God forbid they become citizens. Contrary to what many believe, many immigrants are non here to go citizens. Many want to remain for a short clip and so return to their place. We will write a custom essay sample on The Immigration Problem Essay Research Paper The or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In fact, many immigrants are loath to go legal. Many harbor hopes and dreams of finally returning to their friends and household back place. Then there are the distinguishable few who do non wish to make up ones mind, and would wish hold # 8220 ; double citizenship. # 8221 ; To be loyal to more than one state, to vote in both states, and to go back and forth easy ( Limon ) . To understand the affects of in-migration one must analyze the province where it is more rampant. California is a magnet for immigrants. As a consequence, many claim that immigrants are a great economic load. California does, nevertheless, benefit from its porous boundary lines. The sequence of immigrant groups has brought the province unparalleled cultural diverseness ( Gerston 9 ) . Besides cultural diverseness, California has one of the most diverse economic systems in the universe. Despite its jobs, California prevails in agribusiness, excavation, industry, transit, communicating, electronics, building, and defence. These industries contain a high per centum of immigrants. If California were an independent state, with a 695.3 billion dollar economic system, it would rank eighth in the universe ( Gerston 8 ) . California # 8217 ; s heavy population is a direct consequence of in-migration, which accounts for California # 8217 ; s great political and economic strength. The unregulated motion of goods, services, and people throughout the provinces is what makes this state economically stable and productive. NAFTA ( North American Free Trade Agreement ) and GATT ( General Agreement on Trades and Duties ) are illustrations of successful understandings between neighbouring states. These understandings have resulted in the alone improvement of the economic systems involved. Open markets in banking, insurance, agribusiness, telecommunications, building, touristry, advertisement, etc. are indispensable to a capitalist economic system. We can non, in a universe economic system, near our doors to the remainder of the universe ( Limbaugh ) . The Clinton Administration is committed to cut downing illegal in-migration, and understandings like NAFTA are critical to that attempt ( Christopher 785 ) . Laws do small or nil to control the illegal in-migration job. Everyone claims to be against in-migration, but those same people love the low-cost agricultural merchandises they purchase from the supermarket. No 1 seems to protest the cheap fruits and veggies cultivated and grown by undocumented workers. Politicians who claim to be adamantly against illegal in-migration bend about and engage illegal foreigners. Pete Wilson, Dianne Feinstein, and Michael Huffington have all contributed to the # 8220 ; nannygate # 8221 ; job. It is really no large trade, but it shows how honorable and blunt our politicians are. Everyone contributes to the job, but no 1 will confront world. Let # 8217 ; s face it, we all reep the benefits of illegal in-migration. Let # 8217 ; s bury about all the useless rhetoric, and cut a trade with Mexico and other states that will benefit everyone ( Olmo B7 ) . If politicians are serious about controling in-migration they should seek to beef up the universe economic system. Mexico # 8217 ; s mean salary is one- 6th ours ( Gore ) . Can we anticipate immigrants to remain out? Recent, controversial arguments have struck a fuse in many Americans. Americans who have been laid off or who can # 8217 ; t seem to acquire in front in our capitalist market look to be infuriated by the inflow of illegal foreigners. They feel that they can non vie with low-wage workers. To demo for this is the infinite anti- immigrant statute law being proposed to congress. There are grass-roots enterprises out at that place suggesting to amend the fundamental law to restrict American citizenship entirely to kids born of U.S. citizens merely ( McDonnel A1 ) . A important figure of people wish to eliminate the rights foreign subjects have acquired through the old ages. Americans have proven to be really competitory in the universe market. Especiall those who have a good instruction. Many feel that immigrants do non merit an instruction because they have non contributed to the well being of the community. Already, undocumented pupils are the least likely to be given fiscal aid, and they are frequently charged the highest tuition fees. Under a new tribunal opinion, undocumented Cal State pupils will lose entree to the system # 8217 ; s grants plans ; in add-on, they will be charged out of province fees ( Chandler A3 ) . Many will hold to drop out. That is unfortunate because immigrants tend to be better pupils. One of the biggest concerns Americans have with immigrants is instruction. It is a common and wrong stereotype to believe that immigrant kids bring substandard accomplishments and hapless attitudes to school ( Woo A1 ) . Peoples from all over the universe have brought with them their civilization and enthusiasm for instruction. Prevalent, it is, that many immigrant pupils, legal or non, have classs well higher than their American opposite numbers. A new survey found that kids of immigrant parents have a greater desire to larn. Their classs are superior, they score higher on standardised trials and they aspire to college at a greater rate than their third-generation equals ( Woo A1 ) . While immigrant civil rights groups gain new terms, militant groups are turning at an unprecedented rate. Many of these groups preach hatred and force. Bete Hammond from S.T.P.I.T. ( Stop The Out-of-control Problems of Immigration Today ) said, # 8220 ; It # 8217 ; s bad plenty that we do everything for their citizens when they come here illicitly and interrupt our Torahs, now they want us to bail out their economic system? # 8221 ; Hammond, evidently mentioning to the loan-guarantees to Mexico. Hammond Tells his followings, # 8220 ; we # 8217 ; ve got to take back our country. # 8221 ; Those who tend to hold with statute law directed at immigrants should listen to the statute law # 8217 ; s advocates. S.T.P.I.T has, for the most portion, shown its stance on advancement. They were against NAFTA [ which created new occupations for the three states involved ] , the Mexico # 8220 ; bailout # 8221 ; [ which was merely a loan ] , and they want the strictest Torahs to use merely to our immigrants legal or illegal. Particularly those from states they dislike, viz. : non-anglo, or # 8220 ; inferior countries. # 8221 ; The people who are least likely to be affected by illegal in-migration are the 1s who are more likely to be against it. Barbara A. Coe said, # 8220 ; We are tired of being victims of these people. # 8221 ; Barbara is president of the Orange County-based California Coalition for Immigration Reform, an umbrella group that was a key organiser on behalf of Proposition 187 ( McDonnel A1 ) . Orange County is one of the most flush counties in Southern California. Despite the counties recent economic jobs ( i.e. bankruptcy ) , the people who live there are still in better economic conditions than the remainder of the province. Ultimately, what caused the counties bankruptcy was non immigration, but bad investings. There is no speedy hole to the in-migration job. Peoples have studied the issue for centuries, and no 1 can calculate it out. The universe # 8217 ; s most educated bookmans can non happen the reply to the turning job. The cardinal prevarications in something really simple: a universe authorities. No affair how the economic system is making, no 1 will be left out. A universe authorities can merely happen in my dreams. Unfortunately, there are excessively many gun-toating-crazies ready to label it # 8220 ; communism. # 8221 ; The following best alternate prevarications in a borderless universe. A universe that portions its resources, people, rights, money, and cognition, is a better universe. Our redemption lies in reciprocality non selflessness. The thought of a borderless universe will raise up frights among many. Peoples believe that the universe # 8217 ; s population will all of a sudden seek to infiltrate the Americas. If states were more equal so there would be no demand for in-migration in the foremost topographic point. I do non desire a universe authorities ; I want equality for the universe # 8217 ; s citizens. Brimelow, Peter, . # 8220 ; TIme to Rethink Immigration. # 8221 ; National Review 44 ( 1992 ) : 30-68. 200 Villagers Houses Burnt Down Again Near Barrick Gold Mine in Papua Essay - 1

200 Villagers Houses Burnt Down Again Near Barrick Gold Mine in Papua New Guinea - Essay Example Moreover, there have been reported injuries and deaths of small-scale miners close to the mine. Finally, it has also been alleged that the Porgera Joint Venture Mine’s security and associated state police have meted extreme violence on the locals (MiningWatch Canada, 2014). It is expected that such concerns will lead to a drop in share value, especially due to obvious lack of transparency on the part of Porgera Company (MiningWatch Canada, 2014). In such a case, investors would be at risk of losing their money because of misrepresentation and failure by Porgera to disclose critical information, such as their environmental compliance and agreements with local communities. On top of making them an unattractive investment opportunity, it will also harm their reputation, especially in light of conflicts and death in the local community (MiningWatch Canada, 2014). In addition, they could also be liable to huge fines if they are found guilty of environmental permit violations. These issues have raised various ethical concerns about the company, despite creating social and economic benefits for the community via resource revenues and job creation. The company has obviously failed to sufficiently consult and engage the local community, while they have not given accurate information about the impact of their mining. In addition, there are environmental concerns about the safety of the mines, as well as lack of transparency about economic compensation and use of the local’s land. As a result, Porgera has failed to consider the social, environmental, and economic impacts of their activities, which are all important aspects of ethical mining practices. As a competitor, such issues have been avoided, especially as the company is aware that the local community expects to generate substantial improvements in their living standards (Ali, 2013). The company has sought to

The fifth element is the feedback, which is the return message from the receiver to the sender. Another important element in the communication process is what communication specialists call noises, which tend to disrupt the communication. There are two main noises: mechanical noise and semantic noise. Mechanical noise has to do with such things as static on the radio, lines of type missing from a newspaper, or coughing during a lecture. Semantic noise is the degree of potential misunderstanding between sender and receiver. There are a number of barriers that tend to frustrate, impede, or even halt communication. These barriers may be personal, monological, ideological, or socio-cultural. Personal Barriers can be traced when the sender or receiver or both have negative feelings towards the other. Another example is the physical personal barriers, such as when one of the communicants has a headache or is sleepy. As for the monological barrier, it is when the communicator loses touch with the receivers because he or she is so self-occupied, and is blind to the nature and needs of the audience. On the other hand, many communication problems stem from the fact that communicants have different basic ideologies or political orientations. In addition, communicants will always have trouble communicating if they are not using the same language. Lastly, it is hard to communicate well with someone who has a different culture or belong to a different society. This is due to the differences in values, traditions, background, religion, economic status, etc. Strategies for Managing Interpersonal Conflicts: Dealing with... The management of our own non-verbal communication is extremely important. As nonverbal communication is capable of changing the spoken words in many ways, it is important to realize that we can safeguard our own communication against misinterpretation, if our nonverbal supports our verbal message. In other words, unless we manage the nonverbal attributes of our message so that they are compatible with our words, our total message is open to misinterpretation and may be screwed up. To put it clearly, if the receiver lacks awareness of the significance of the factors influencing the nonverbal communication, then he is likely to remain confused. It can be said that a large portion of a message comes not from the words spoken, but from nonverbal attributes that can be transmitted and received consciously or unconsciously. Such nonverbal communication usually serves a variety of functions in relation to verbal communication. Examples of these functions include repeating, complementing, c ontradicting, substituting, and regulating. Thus, the person who is not only aware of the nonverbal message and the factors influencing it, but also who manages his own nonverbal communication, is less likely to be confused or confusing. Finally, it can be concluded that most researchers agree on the importance and significance of nonverbal attributes in interpersonal communication. This belief is the motive behind the quotation: "What are words when the body can bend, cry, shout, and jump! There's language in one's eyes' and cheeks, lips and hips."

E-business system Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4000 words

E-business system - Essay Example On a broad analysis, the effect of e-commerce in people’s life has not been only in one dimension but through a wide spectrum of use, internet has been widely adopted for use in matters of shopping and transacting almost all bank procedures. Online shopping for various goods as well as services have not left consumer goods and services unattended to and according to the ‘Nielsen Global Consumer Report June 2010’ shopping for goods and services have had great evolution in the onset of online shopping (The Nielsen Company, 2010, p. 2). The advent of online stores through which sellers displays their goods and services and through which consumers shop for their consumer goods characterizes today’s commerce industry. Debates have however shaped the discussions about the topic of e banking; why the modern day banking institutions are adopting the e-commerce practices through adoption of such technologies as the internet for performing the transactions as against the traditional physical banking practices. Supporters of the practice of physical/manual banking procedures (who often are the older generation (Madden, 2010, p. 2), and who are opposed to the electronic banking practices, reasons that banking physically is easy and entails little logistics. It only gives one opportunities to conduct the banking procedures physically/manually where one-one interactions are preferred to the electronic practices. On the other hand, the supporters of the online banking practices affirm that the practice is more convenient than the physical banking in that one would have access to banking services such as withdrawals, transfers as well as transacting other complex banking transactions without physically visiting a banking facility (Hazel and Raphael, 2001, p. 4). The decisions to offer the online banking services by banking institutions may therefore stem from various reasons such as the convenience to customers, the good returns in use of internet fo r the procedures (which reduces the human labor costs incurred) and the general advancement of technology as is widely acknowledged in the current era. However, the evaluation of the advantages as well as associated factors that influence the adoption of online banking methods by different banking institutions takes to cognition that these services adopted vary from one region to another and from one country to another (Diniz, Porto and Adachi, 2004, p. 41-42). Institutional frameworks and culture within countries and the governments may have influence on the choice of methods of banking practices such as the internet banking. For instance, among some cultures, technological advancement is not appreciated and hence the effect to adoption of online practices such as banking would be unfavorable (Tan and Teo, 2000, p. 1-4). 2.0 DISCUSSION There has been noted evolution within the practice as necessitated by the

Recommendations for Philippines Health Services

Recommendations for Philippines Health Services QUESTION: How do we improve quality of health services in the Philippines as a whole? What efforts have been taken and what are the challenges. ANSWER: In developing countries like Philippines, quality of health services has been an issue. Though the Philippine government provide projects on how to improve quality of care, still there are people who encountered problems on how to seek medical attention and treatment. It is said that the deficiencies in quality of care represent neither the failure of professional compassion nor necessarily a lack of resources. They result from gaps in knowledge, inappropriate applications of available technology, or the inability of organizations to change (Berwick 1989). These are just some examples of factors affecting the quality services that needs to be given attention. Local health care systems may have failed to align practitioner incentives and objectives, to measure clinical practice, or to link quality improvement to better health outcomes. Improving clinical practice and quality of care should take place over months and not years so as to achieve economic growth, educational advancement o r new technology (Improving Quality of Care in Developing Countries by John W. Peabody, Mario M. Taguiwalo, David A. Robalino and Julio Frenk). Health systems provide health actions or activities in order to improve or maintain health. The government has set some policies and programs that will help Filipino people but it is not implemented well. In December 2011, by an article from the USAID/Philippines, United States Agency International Development (USAID) has conducted a pilot demonstration of citizen participation in health governance from June 2009 to August 2010. Through improvements in health governance at the facility level, the goal was to demonstrate increase in the utilized MCH services. Health Systems 20/20 supported the establishment of facility-based governance committees that focus on improving quality of health services: Quality Assurance Partnership Committees (QAPCs) located at the three sites in Mindanao. The Quality Assurance Partnership Committees (QAPCs) is a governance mechanism that brings together local leaders and government officials, health service providers, civil society, and community representatives to address issues related to access, availability, and quality of maternal and child health related services in local facilities. The QAPC was envisioned to provide oversight and problem solving actions to improve maternal and child health services in the three pilot facilities. Through a grant from Health Systems 20/20, the Gerry Roxas Foundation (GRF), a local NGO, facilitated the introduction, organization, and functioning of QAPCs in the three demonstration sites, with enthusiastic support from elected officials, health facility managers, and loca l officials. The three sites were:. the Rural Health Unit in the municipality of Lopez Jaena, the City Health Office in Oroquieta City, and the Provincial Hospital in Compostela Valley. Aside from giving the civil society a voice in health service delivery and quality, at the same time, it can increase the accountability of local officials and providers to their communities for services delivered. From an end-of-project assessment field visit conducted in July 2010, the following findings emerged: Anecdotal evidence suggested that community participation via the QAPCs contributed to client-focused and responsive MCH service delivery, expanded outreach from the facility to MCH service users, and increased MCH service utilization. The QAPCs strengthened the linkage between facilities and service users by sensitizing communities regarding MCH issues, and mobilizing community members to utilize available services. The major governance outcome at the facility level was increased responsiveness to community needs and preferences. A related secondary outcome was some increase in accountability to clients. Beyond governance at the facility level, the QAPC experience demonstrated the importance of decentralized local government to the effective functioning and sustainability of a co-governance innovation that brings together citizens and public-sector health providers. The integration of the QAPC pilot with the Philippines Department of Health’s existing quality assurance program, the Service Delivery Excellence in Health (SDexH) initiative, was critical to the success of the demonstration project. SDexH provides an accepted framework that connects quality clinical standards and accreditation to a definition of quality that incorporates client perceptions and community input. The potential for institutionalization of the QAPCs was enhanced by the ownership of the concept by local government officials. In all three cases, local chief executives issued Executive Orders giving official recognition to the QAPCs, and were strongly supportive of the committees. Two of the three QAPCs received a commitment from local governments to provide ongoing financial support to cover expenses for community members to participate in the committees. In the Compostela Valley Provincial Hospital, the director included the QAPC as an activity the Wellness Center, which assures the committee ongoing support and a venue. The demonstration project team drafted aQAPC process guidefor use by other local governments in the Philippines that are interested in replicating the committees for health facilities in their jurisdictions (www.healthsystems2020.org/section/where_we_work/philippines ). Access to the health care system is required to obtain the care that maintains or improves health, but simple access is not enough and it is said to be applied skillfully. Quality is comprising of the following elements to achieve it, namely structure, process and the outcomes. Structural measures are the easiest to obtain and most commonly used in studies of quality in developing countries. Many evaluations have revealed shortages in medical staff, medications and other important supplies and facilities, but material measures of structure are not causally related to better health outcomes (Donabedian 1980). Process, by contrast, can be measured with every visit to a provider. In addition, evidence-based clinical studies have steadily revealed which process measures lead to better outcomes. This combination of ubiquity, measurability, and linkage to health outcomes makes the measurement of process the preferred way to assess quality. Another project of the government is the committment to the United Nation millennium declaration that translated into a roadmap a set of goals that targets reduction of poverty, hunger and ill health (www.doh.gov.ph/node/1076.html) . In the light of this government commitment, the Department of Health is faced with a challenge to champion the cause of women and children towards achieving MDGs 4 (reduce child mortality), 5 (improve maternal health) and 6 (combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases). Pregnancy and child birth are among the leading causes of death, disease and disability in women of reproductive age in developing countries. The Philippine government commitment to the MDGs is, among others, a commitment to work towards the reduction of maternal mortality ratios by three-quarters and under-five mortality by two-thirds by 2015 at all cost. Confronted with the challenge of MDG 5 and the multi-faceted challenges of high maternal mortality ratio, increasing neonatal deaths particularly on the first week after birth, unmet need for reproductive health services and weak maternal care delivery system, in addition to identifying the technical interventions to address these problems, the DOH with support from the World Bank decided to focus on making pregnancy and childbirth safer and sought to change fundamental societal dynamics that influence decision making on matters related to pregnancy and childbirth while it tries to bring quality emergency obstetrics and newborn care to facilities nearest to homes. http://www.doh.gov.ph/content/national-safe-motherhood-program.html . This moves ensures that those most in need of quality health care by competent doctors, nurses and midwives have easy access to such care. The Department of Health has set the national objectives for 2011-2016 with overall goal that is to improved access to quality hospitals and health facilities by all Filipinos, especially the poor (www.doh.gov.ph). Their strategic objectives have improved, enhanced, ensured and these are the following : 1: Access to quality health facilities and services, especially those commonly used by the poor; 2: Quality of inpatient and outpatient care; 3: Availability of essential drugs and medicines in all levels of government health facilities; 4: Access to specialized services in sib-national health facilities; 5: Governance, sustainability and fiscal autonomy of government hospital; 6: and the client responsiveness of health facilities. For the government to achieve the objectives, they do a targeted health facility program that shall leverage funds for improved facility capacity to adequately manage the most common causes of mortality and morbidity, including trauma; setting provision of fi nancial mechanisms drawing form public-private partnerships to support the immediate repair, rehabilitation and construction of selected priority health facilities; making fiscal autonomy and income retention schemes for government hospitals and health facilities; unifying and streamlining DOH licensure and Phil Health accreditation for hospitals and health facilities and regional clustering and referral networks of health facilities based on their catchment areas to address the current fragmentation of health services in some regions within the Philippines. (Improving Access to Quality Hospitals and Health Services, www.doh.gov.ph/sites/default/files/6%20Chapter4.pdf ) Though it has not 100% achieved, the government with the help of many institutions, banks, and support from other countries, can be reached with the efforts of the people who are responsible for the implementation and monitoring of these activities. I believe that thru these efforts, Philippines will have an improved health services in the near future. REFERENCES: John W. Peabody, Mario M. Taguiwalo, David A. Consumer and Organisational Buying Behaviour Assignment :: Business and Management Studies

Consumer and Organisational Buying Behaviour Assignment Choose two adverts from the press (newspapers or Magazines) one of a high involvement good and the other of a low involvement good. Compare them while identifying the various techniques used in consumer behaviour to communicate the message. You may contact the producers of the advert. High Involvement Good: Residence Relevant Advert: Ad for Apartment in Tigne’ Point. Low Involvement Good: International Telephone service Relevant Advert: Ad for OneVoice Low-cost International phone cards International phone calls are nowadays an everyday necessity for many people living in the Western world, whether for business purposes or to keep in touch with partners, friends or relatives abroad. This is especially so in Malta since practically every Maltese person living here has relatives who have emigrated, a substantial expatriate community exists and because of the small size of the island and total absence of most raw materials, almost every kind of business necessitates frequent international phone calls. Besides, as the OneVoice advert I have chosen clearly demonstrates, international phone calls have become as affordable (and as necessary) to many people living in Malta as low cost basic food stuffs and drinks. Hence in Malta one can now consider an international phone call service as a low involvement good since most people living locally have to resort to it quite frequently and do not think much about it beyond selecting a cheap, reliable, value for money service. The OneVoice advert thus makes quite a huge issue of price and implied value for money by publicizing the cheapest rate very prominently against a bright red background and stating the service’s other desirable features against a bright green eye-catching background. The advert in fact has just the right mix of the saturated colours green, yellow, cyan, orange and red to capture attention without overwhelming people and causing visual fatigue. There is also an adequate amount of blue which is considered a rather relaxing colour associated with class and high quality and with the limitlessness and peace of sky and water. This mix of various, bright colours (a) ensures that every potential client’s tastes is, somehow, catered for at least visually (b) is locally associated with festive seasons (Christmas, Carnival, summertime) spring, fun and plenty and so gives a certain â€Å"feel good† factor to using OneVoice even though at the end of the day OneVoice is just another basic international telephone service. Conversely no indication of price range is given in the advert for Tigne’ Point properties although it is obvious that it is aimed at the international yachting community and other extremely affluent, rather

Nietzsche’s Attitude to Religion Essay

I carefully read Ms S Ramola Naidu’s Ph. D. dissertation entitled â€Å"Culture, History, Politics: The Representation of Women in the American War Novels of Ernest Hemingway, e. e. cummings, Joseph Heller, Kurt Vonnegut Jr. † submitted at Osmania University, Hyderabad. Divided into four chapters, the dissertation is neatly chalked out with a very informative introduction and a befitting conclusion. All the four novels undertaken for the study dwell upon the image of the American women against the background of the World Wars. Chapter I, â€Å"Fragmentation of Society: The Enormous Room,† shows that women are not the weaker sex but are the pillars that support family and society. Chapter II entitled â€Å"Triumph of Love: A Farewell to Arms† deals with the evil effects of the First World War on society in general and on women in particular. Chapter III, â€Å"Parental Indifference: Mother Night,† focuses on the catastrophe of the Second World War disapproving â€Å"the ultra-modern American woman who sacrifices the basic demands of her family† (page 9, Abstract). The last chapter, â€Å"Bureaucratic Callousness: Catch 22† depicts the chaotic military organizations and the ugliness and brutality of human exploitation. Ms Naidu’s topic has a great relevance to the present political context in the entire world standing on the threshold of another atomic war. It has become our responsibility to avoid war upto the possible limit for the peace, prosperity, and happiness of human beings. Through her study Ms Naidu tries to evince that the holocaust of World Wars has engendered a lot of human miseries problems, the loss of human dignity and ntegrity, eventually reducing man to the status of a tragic figure. She is also sure that women problems cannot be solved through any slogan or being a liberate women or feminist. A woman can achieve her dignity cherishing a firm faith in the sanctity of true love, basic emotions and feelings, sacrifice and moral and social values. Ms Naidu is quite successful in delineating the writers’ vision about a bright future that is not far fetched provided every individual develops a positive attitude towards life. It is good piece of research embodying clarity, critical acumen, and hard industry of the candidate. The thesis is characterized by a refined and chiselled language, though a few syntactical, grammatical, and punctuation errors are also visible here and there. It is a purely thematic study. The candidate has adopted an analytical method; and the representation of women in the American novels of the mentioned writers has been highlighted through the analysis of plots, characters, dialogues, and settings. She is capable enough to display her critical insight, logical coherence, and the skill of the assimilation of material in the corpus of the thesis. It is well-written and fulfils all the requirements of a good dissertation. In view of the above, I am pleased to recommend that Ms Ramaola Naidu deserves the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English of Osmania University, Hyderabd.

A Comprehensive Guide on Writing a Character Analysis

A Comprehensive Guide on Writing a Character Analysis 10 Steps to Creating an Outstanding Character Essay Analysis Character analysis is an essay, which aims to describe a certain character from a book or a popular figure that exists in reality. Such paper is concentrated on personal features and character of an analyzed person. However, a high school character analysis greatly differs from a college one, because it requires more detailed research and has specific demands. Moreover, you also need to follow one of the formatting styles: MLA; APA; Harvard; Chicago/Turabian. If you are a college freshman or have never written a university character analysis before, you should be ready to face lots of requirements, including context, structure and thoughtful analysis. You can include personal stories and experience to support the topic. Below we have gathered the best 10 tips to write a flawless character analysis. A thorough research You must know every feature of the analyzed character, his personal qualities and background. That is why you should gather as much opinions and views, as possible. You should understand that the same character looks completely different in various sources, so it is important to stick not only to the initial book but also to other credible sources. They include: Newspapers; Magazines; Articles; Blogs; Videos. Shape your ideas with the help of an outline Outline is not a compulsory part of your character analysis if the opposite is not indicated by your professor. However, it is a very important section for your own convenience, because with its help you will always know what to write about, step-by-step. Without an outline you can lose track of the general flow of your essay and won’t be able to deliver a quality text. An outline is a plan, a list of all the ideas you want to share with the reader. Strong introduction and a thesis statement Every written assignment should always start with an introduction paragraph, which contains a thesis statement in the last sentence. Your goal is to prove the audience that you have serious reasons to write about a chosen character. You can insert a quote from the source text or provide interesting and unknown details about a person you want to tell about. However, such information should be general, without too much information. Describe hero’s character Your body paragraphs should contain information on all of the features you have found about the discussed person. Start with a powerful statement and then support it with evidence. Remind all of the episodes, which prove your point of view. For that purpose you will have to read the book from the first page to the last one. Write about the key conflict Even though your task is to discuss a person or a character, you should still explain what the main conflict of the analyzed piece is. This will help you to explain the reader why the analyzed character is good or bad, acts right or wrong, etc. If you are not able to identify the conflict on your own, turn to your professor or a professional writing company! Use clear language Some students think that a character analysis doesn’t require academic language and decide to use slang instead. However, your essay should always remain academic and contain clear English. Never use words, which you are not able to find in the vocabulary, as it may greatly lower your final marks. Make sure you choose a proper character type Every literature assignment should include specific terms, so when you analyze a character you should always define what his type is: Protagonist (the main hero); Antagonist; Major character; Minor character; Dynamic; Stereotypical; Foils; Single-dimensional; Three-dimensional. State your position You need to process various opinions and arguments to show the character both from good and bad sides. In addition, you need to present a fresh look on the plot of the story and on the character himself to interest the reader. Include questions without an answer You can tell the audience about unanswered questions from the text or ask them yourself. In such a way, your reader will think about your essay even after finishing it and may even want to continue the research. Get quality assistance If you are limited in time and have tens of other assignments to be delivered, we are there to help! Even if you don’t have a wish to work on a character analysis or have no ideas what to write about, there is no need to panic.
